Anticipatory, Goal-Directed Behavior

چکیده
As Man is a reasonable Being, and is continually in Pursuit of Happiness, which he hopes to find in the Gratification of some Passion or Affection, he seldom acts or speaks or thinks without a Purpose and Intention. He has still some Object in View; and however improper the Means may sometimes be, which he causes for the Attainments of his End, he never loses View of an End, nor will he so much as throw away his Thoughts or Reflections, where he hopes not to reap any Satisfaction from them. Future-oriented emotions: Conceptualization and behavioral effects
We distinguish between two kinds of future-oriented emotions (anticipatory and anticipated) and investigate their behavioral effects. Anticipatory emotions are currently experienced due to the prospect of a future event (e.g., hope or fear). Anticipated emotions, on the other hand, are expected to be experienced in the future if certain events do or do not occur (e.g., anticipated joy or regret...
متن کاملExtrapolation and direct matching mediate anticipation in infancy.
Why are infants able to anticipate occlusion events and other people's actions but not the movement of self-propelled objects? This study investigated infant and adult anticipatory gaze shifts during observation of self-propelled objects and human goal-directed actions. Six-month-old infants anticipated self-propelled balls but not human actions. This demonstrates that different processes media...
متن کاملDopamine modulation of hippocampal-prefrontal cortical interaction drives memory-guided behavior.
Information gleaned from learning and memory processes is essential in guiding behavior toward a specific goal. However, the neural mechanisms that determine how these processes are effectively utilized to guide goal-directed behavior are unknown. Here, we show that rats utilize retrospective and prospective memory and flexible switching between these 2 memory processes to guide behaviors to ob...
متن کاملSelf-Organizing Sensorimotor Maps Plus Internal Motivations Yield Animal-Like Behavior
This article investigates how a motivational module can drive an animat to learn a sensorimotor cogni-tive map and use it to generate flexible goal-directed behavior. Inspired by the rat's hippocampus and neighboring areas, the time growing neural gas (TGNG) algorithm is used, which iteratively builds such a map by means of temporal Hebbian learning. The algorithm is combined with a motivation ...
متن کاملThinking as the control of imagination: a conceptual framework for goal-directed systems.
This paper offers a conceptual framework which (re)integrates goal-directed control, motivational processes, and executive functions, and suggests a developmental pathway from situated action to higher level cognition. We first illustrate a basic computational (control-theoretic) model of goal-directed action that makes use of internal modeling. We then show that by adding the problem of select...
متن کاملElectrical neuroimaging reveals content-specific effects of threat in primary visual cortex and fronto-parietal attentional networks
Whereas effects of anticipatory anxiety on attention are usually assumed to remain largely undifferentiated, discrepant findings in the literature suggest that, depending on its content and causes, different modulatory effects on attention control and early sensory processing may arise. Using electrical neuroimaging and psychophysiology in a cross-over design, we tested the hypothesis that diff...
